Moira K. Smith
Moira K. Smith joined the firm in 2009. Before coming to Ashburn & Mason, Moira served as a law clerk for Justice Dana Fabe of the Alaska Supreme Court.
Moira maintains an active general civil litigation and pro bono practice and assists in the firm’s oil and gas litigation and regulatory practices. Moira is a member of the Alaska Bar Association’s Lawyers’ Assistance Committee.
Before law school, Moira worked as a legislative aide, as a special assistant to then-Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer, and as head of the Legal Assistance through Refugee Clinic project of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee. Moira co-authored Voting Rights in Alaska, 1982-2006, 17:1 S. Cal. R. L. & Social Justice 79 (2008), which prompted the Native American Rights Fund and the Alaska Civil Liberties Union to file Nick v. Bethel. This lawsuit resulted in a settlement requiring the State of Alaska and the City of Bethel to provide translation and interpretation assistance for all Yup'ik speaking voters throughout the registration and voting process.
Moira worked on, and the firm prevailed in, Anchorage Board of Adjustment v. LBJ, LLC, 228 P.3d 87 (Alaska 2010).
In law school, Moira served on the National Moot Court team for two years, competing in the regional and the national competitions.
